Administration of
rectal Diazepam and Midazolam
Carers working in a professional
capacity with people who have epilepsy may be
required to have knowledge and understanding
of epilepsy and also proficiency in the management
of seizures where emergency medication is required.
Epilepsy West Lothian run courses which aim
to provide participants with training to enable
them to deal with such situations in a safe
and effective manner.
The Emergency Medication Administration
programme is delivered over two half days. This
course is designed for people who have already
attended part one epilepsy awareness training

Part two (Administration of
rectal diazepam/Midazolam) will equip the participants
with:
• Seizure management
• Diazepam/Midazolam – how it works,
side effects
• Protocol for using emergency treatment
• How to administer diazepam/Midazolam
– practical session
• Use of care plan
• Legal & ethical issues
The final part of the
course involves:
• A written assessment
to determine the participants general understanding
and knowledge of epilepsy
• A practical assessment to determine
the participants competence in administering
rectal diazepam and/or Midazolam.
On completion of the course
and assessment a short report will be forwarded
to the line manager. A certificate will be issued
on satisfactory completion of the course and
assessment.
