Emergency Medication Training...

Administration of rectal Diazepam and Midazolam

Carers working in a professional capacity with people who have epilepsy may be required to have knowledge and understanding of epilepsy and also proficiency in the management of seizures where emergency medication is required. Epilepsy West Lothian run courses which aim to provide participants with training to enable them to deal with such situations in a safe and effective manner.

The Emergency Medication Administration programme is delivered over two half days. This course is designed for people who have already attended part one epilepsy awareness training (click on to go back to this page)

Part two (Administration of rectal diazepam/Midazolam) will equip the participants with:

• Seizure management
• Diazepam/Midazolam – how it works, side effects
• Protocol for using emergency treatment
• How to administer diazepam/Midazolam – practical session
• Use of care plan
• Legal & ethical issues

The final part of the course involves:

• A written assessment to determine the participants general understanding and knowledge of epilepsy
• A practical assessment to determine the participants competence in administering rectal diazepam and/or Midazolam.

On completion of the course and assessment a short report will be forwarded to the line manager. A certificate will be issued on satisfactory completion of the course and assessment.
