about...

Epilepsy West Lothian is a recognised Scottish Charity providing services relevant to epilepsy to the people of West Lothian, which has an estimated population of over 150, 000. We are based at Bloom House in Livingston Villiage, West Lothian. Within the West Lothian area, there are an estimated 1500 children and adults with epilepsy. Our client base potentially encompasses all of these people as well as their carersfamilies, friends, colleagues and employers. We aim to ensure that they are all aware of our services and that the services we provide are readily accessible to them.

There are numerous forms of epileptic seizures with various manifestations causing different degrees of impairment. In some people, the seizures can occur daily or many times a day. Many people experience problems, which accompany the diagnosis of epilepsy. They include:

  • Reduced quality of life
  • Restricted job opportunities
  • Lack of independent mobility through being unable to drive
  • Lack of self confidence and feelings of isolation
  • Impaired social and educational development
  • Constant risk of physical harm as the result of a seizure
  • However, the greatest barrier people with epilepsy have to encounter is ignorance and prejudices.

aims:

To reduce stigma by raising awareness of epilepsy issues
To improve standards of and access to health and social care for people with epilepsy
To promote the need for integrated services for people with epilepsy
To challenge discrimination and disadvantage in employment
